De Wain Valentine. Gray Column.

De Wain Valentine. Gray Column, 1975–76
De Wain Valentine’s Gray Column is made of polyester resin and is being exhibited for the first time in the exact way the artist wanted it to be at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles (From Start to Finish: De Wain Valentine’s Gray Column, September 13, 2011–March 11, 2012).
A video documents the fabrication process of a sculpture that – some say – could never have been made elsewhere than in California, where light is so exceptional.
De Wain Valentine was one of several artists from Southern California who explored new materials developed for industrial use in the post-World War II era.
Flash Art publishes an interview with Jack Brogan, a key collaborator of Southern Californian artists who recently contributed to restore Gray Column (Process is not dead. Interview with Jack Brogan and Tom Learner by Patrick Steffen, Flash Art, January February 2012, p. 37-38).
In May 2012, Katherine Cone Gallery in Los Angeles will organize a tribute show to Jack Brogan, You don’t know Jack.
